How to test a smoke alarm

When a smoke alarm has been fitted it is vital that you test it regularly to ensure it works properly.

This involves pressing the test button once a week, opening the case and gently vacuuming inside to remove dust every six months and changing the batteries once a year. Alternatively, you should replace the battery if the low battery warning sounds (an intermittent bleep).
